Canet

The town

Canet d'en Berenguer is a small coastal town, located in Camp de Morvedre county. Its square shaped town limits make the settlement independent from the large municipality of Sagunto that shares its northern and western boarders, ending at River Palancia to the south and the Mediterranean Sea to the east. Canet is a peaceful Mediterranean town a kilometre inland from the sea, sitting at 6m above sea level and at equal distance from both Valencia and Castellón, both 30km by motorway. In this town, surrounded by orange trees, the Church and the Castell (castle) stand out.
The Church, preserving a Byzantine style religious icon, was built in the 18th century.
The House-Palace, popularly called "El Castell", is believed to have been built in the area where an old Castle-Fortress stood.

The beach

Canet has one of the best beaches in the Community of Valencia. It stretches out over one and a half kilometres, with shallow crystal clear water.
The blue flag, a symbol of clean waters that are well taken care of, complying with the EU regulations, is raised year after year on these beaches. An extensive area of sand, which includes protected dunes, separates the seafront promenade from the shoreline.
The annual temperature variation is minimal, with an average of 20ºC which lets you uninterruptedly enjoy warm water for the most of the year.

History

The exact date of the first settlements is unknown, but Roman artefacts have been found in the municipality. These are tombstones and coins, which isn't surprising given how close Sagunto it is, a historic city which has contributed architectonic elements to the whole county. It is known that Canet was a farmstead in Muslim times with its requisite peasant population.
In the 13th century Canet was conquered by the Christian troops of Jaime I Since then and until the present day Canet has had a stable population.
In the 16th century, Gaspar Escolano spoke of 45 houses, in the 18th century Antonio José Cavanilles counted a population of 100 inhabitants, reaching 516 in the middle of the 19th century.
At present Canet has just over two thousand registered residents, which increases to 20,000 in summer. Canet was a feudal barony in 1420, linked to Francisco Berenguer. It passed through the hands of various families of Valencian nobles until the feudal system came to an end. The Lighthouse is its most noteworthy landmark, whose main characteristic is being located 300 metres inland. It is approximately 30 metres high and has a reach of 25 miles.
